Ms. Bixler's Scientists

The east end of the school property is a great place to have science class.  We went to our outdoor classroom to practice using magnifying glasses and to explore the world around us.  We found locust shells, ant hills, acorns, pine cones, and several bugs and plants.  We inspected all of these things close up and enjoyed sharing what we found.

Monarch Butterflies with Michelle Olsen
Michelle Olsen came to teach us about Monarch butterflies.  We got to see different stages of the butterflies' lives and tagged and released a male and a female butterfly.

Apple Day
September 25th was Kindergarten Apple Day.  We learned about Johnny Appleseed, parts of an apple and how apples grow.  We made homemade applesauce and caramel apples.  We even painted with our apples.

Homecoming
Get your picture of your little Eagle Cheerleader or Eagle football player!  Rain or shine we had the parade!  We enjoyed popcorn and watching the parade go by from under our umbrella!

In the Classroom - September
-  In math we learned how to measure height.  We tried to build towers bigger than us and measured them with strips of paper.  We then compared the lengths of different strips to see who built the tallest tower.
-  Miss Bixler's class made a scarecrow.
-  Mr. Becker's class are pro's at dominos!

Firetruck Ride
Thank you to the Oxford Junction Volunteer Fire Department for teaching us about fire safety, showing us equipment and trucks, and for the wonderful ride around town!

Harvest Playground Fieldtrip
Thank you to Farmer Andreesen for showing us how a combine works.  We are lucky that we were able to go to the playground and see something new.  He taught us what a combine does, how beans are harvested and taught us about the ladybugs that have taken over our playground.  We are so lucky to have people in the community that care to share what they do!

Drug Prevention Week with STAND
STAND is the group Students Against Negative Decisions from the highschool.  They came to the elementary to teach about drugs and alcohol and how they are not good for your body.  Thank you to the group and Mr. Cox for taking the time out of their day to help us learn to stay healthy!

Fieldtrip to Pride of the Wapsi Pumpkin Patch
To help us understand more about pumpkins, farms, and the harvest season we went to the Pride of the Wapsi near Dewitt.  We learned about different kinds of pumpkins, how pumpkins grow, and how bees are important to pumpkins.  We got to visit many farm animals up close, pick our pumpkin from the field, ride on a hayrack ride, and explore a corn maze.  Thank you to the Pride of the Wapsi staff and to all the volunteers that came with us that day.  We couldn't have done it without you!

Halloween Fun
After reading Bartholomew and the Oobleck we tried to figure out what Oobleck was.  We got down and dirty making and exploring the characteristics of the goo.  Oobleck is a special creation that is not a liquid or a solid, making it very fun to play with.  In the afternoon we played games with parent volunteers before ending the day in a very fun costume parade and dance.  Thank you to all that helped!

Thanksgiving Feast
The Kindergarten feast was a great way to share all we learned about the first Thanksgiving.  All of the kindergarteners got together to enjoy the meal they created.  We make apple muffins, pumpkin bread, fruit salad and homemade butter.  We made placemats with Native American symbols, pilgrim hats and Native American headbands to use and wear.

Winter
The elementary concert was a great one.  The kids did a wonderful job!  We would like to wish you all a Beary Merry Holiday Season!  This album also includes pictures from outdoor winter fun, a visit from Myah the Alaskan Husky, and our holiday party.

100's Day
We had a great time celebrating 100 days of school.  We ran relays, counted to 100 by 1's, 5's, and 10's, made catepillar hats, played M&M math games, and ate delicious trail mix.  Thank you to all who sent treats and volunteered.  We can't have days like this without great families!
